What causes male genital herpes?

Male genital herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). There are two kinds of HSV,

  • Type 1: This causes outbreaks around the mouth and nose and is often known as oral herpes
  • Type 2: This occurs around the genital area and is often known as genital herpes.

Herpes is extremely infectious, and can spread easily through sexual contact and physical contact with an infected area of skin. People with herpes are recommended to avoid sexual contact during an outbreak and use a latex condom during intercourse.

What are the symptoms?

Common symptoms include: blisters and sores around the genital region painful urination. During an outbreak, skin is red and inflamed. Later it will start to show bumps, which are the beginning of blisters forming on the skin. Later, these blisters can break, and open sores are seen. These sores are painful and are also infectious. After time and treatment runs its course, the sores form scabs and heal. The virus then goes into remission and visible symptoms fade.

Treatment

Though incurable, there are several options a doctor can offer to minimize and reduce the intensity of outbreaks. Another important reason for taking medication is that it can lower the chances that the virus is transmitted to a partner.

Before treatment is administered a doctor must be sure that you are infected. Checks may include blood testing, physical examination or a questionnaire related to the patient's sexual activities.

Orally administered treatments for male genital herpes work to suppress the virus. They are often taken daily. They include Valtrex and Famvir.

Administered regularly, and with the correct dosage, these treatments can help you to live a perfectly healthy sex life.
